concept & collection

The aim of this project is expressing personality, durability and quality in a collection. It is also the start of finding a personal handwriting and a clear, relevant vision on fashion. Craftmanship and technique are very important.

In the first part of atelier, the focus lays on experimenting and coming up with interesting results for the start of a collection. In the second part the focus is on creating a collection and realizing an outfit.

In the lessons of Atelier 1 the aim is to make a lot of experiments to explore new shapes and silhouettes with non fashion objects. From the start my shapes were voluminous and organic with a lot of waves and layering.

Ultimately the conclusion was made to continue with the organic and natural shapes and see this as a starting point for my concept and collection.

research

After making the conclusions about my experiments, I researched 3 aspects I found interesting and fitting with the conclusions.

Disassembly from

Paul Bownick.

A photography project in which he combines flowers with unusual objects to get a grip on nature and makes his own nature.

I already used some of these photos in my collages from my experiments and the idea of making your own nature really interests me.

Still Life with Artichokes, Flowers and Glass Vessels - Juan van der Hamen y León

This painting looks very realistic, but it could never exist in real life. Painters in the Golden Age made these bouquets based on sketches and studies of flowers. This meant that a lot of the flowers would never bloom at the same time. They made up their own nature. This is very inspiring to me and one of the key elements of my concept.

Key elements for my concept:

  • idea of inventing your own nature

  • translating the happy atmosphere of the flower fields into a modern concept and collection

The flower fields in my hometown

In the spring the flowerfields in my hometown will change into the most beautiful and happy colours. This has always inspired me, but now, even more during corona, the colorful fields helped me to stay positive and be creative.

I like the combination of the strong and graphic lines combined with the organic flowers.

making my own flowers

The starting point are the flowers that I grew up with and I transformed them into more modern and abstract ones.  When I had all the different shapes I tried to mix them and make new silhouettes. This resulted in fresh, new and abstract silhouettes.

Making my own nature based on the flowers I know, but mixing things up and making new flower shapes. So it will be modern and fresh.

I strive to give people a happy and positive feeling when they look at my concept and collection.

workshop 2

Atelier 2 is all about creating a collection and researching technique, form and construction. I chose to follow the track Hybrid, what means that I worked analogue and digital. I followed two specializations: craft and print.

I created this embroidery experiment, what became the starting point for my collection. I photoshopped this experiment and placed it differently on my half scale mannequin.

print

I wanted to incorporate more graphic and geometric shapes in my print as a contrast with my silhouettes and crafts. I got the inspired when I biked around in my hometown through the flowerfields.

In my line-up I want to use print and embroidery to showcase the flowers on the volumes. I made the flower shape more 3D by adding an extra colored layer.

I made a lot of Broderie Anglaise samples to experiment how I wanted it to look in the line-up. Finally I chose two main embroideries and optimized them for my dress.

Next to the analogue process, I was busy visualizing my lineup in Clo3D. Slowly the outfits and all the details came together and in the end I had a nice overview of what I imagined when I made the collage line-up.

Normally in Atelier you have to finish two analogue outfits. Because of Covid-19 I had the chance to work Hybrid and make one perfect analogue outfit and one perfect digital outfit.

This outfit is completely finalized, there are topstitches on the body, I made my own tulle texture and even embroidered beads digitally on this dress.

analogue process

The most important aspect in my outfits is the construction. The shape needs to be big and to have a lot of volume. I spend a lot of time experimenting with boning and tulle to create that effect. And this experimenting was at home because of Covid-19.

My dress contains a lot of handwork, like sewing the lining by hand to the dress and embroidering the beads..
